Our Garden

We started our urban homesteading with just a small backyard that we packed with vegetables, herbs, and flowers.
We then had the opportunity to purchase the lot next door to our house. By the summer of 2009 we purchased the lot plus 13 feet past the fence in the back. The lot was full of gravel, weeds, including the dreaded Japanese Knot Weed, but we were totally excited –dreaming about fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, etc. You can see more about this process in our first post, A Bit of Earth.
This is what our little urban homestead looked like when we first owned it -- definitely still looking very urban - graffiti included on the back fence.

We got a couple truck loads of dirt

and the raised beds began taking shape.

You can read more about that process on our post, Reclamation.

David planted apricot and peach trees and we began tearing down the old fence.

We added a shadow box style cedar fence on the back line of our garden

as well as a steel fence along the front sidewalk.

By the end of the summer of 2010, the neglected vacant lot was transformed into a beautiful space.
